Lily

I want to make a family with Abe. Adorable little boys with his soulful brown eyes and sassy little girls who take after his mom in their tenacity and drive. I want that, I really do. Someday. When Abe’s workaholic tendencies are under control and his dad’s done handing over the reins of the company. When I’ve got a career that’s made me proud, one I that allows me to feel fulfilled while giving me the freedom to spend as much time as I need to with our kids. Can Abe wait until then?

Sitting on my husband’s lap, the iron bar of his erection nudging against my ass, insistently pulsing under me even in the midst of such a grave discussion, has arousal buzzing and pushing aside the sadness that’s plagued me for weeks. His arms wrap around me so tightly I almost lose my breath.

The quiet grows between us, my question heavy in the air. The more time that passes without his answer the more my nerves start to slink back in. Finally, he begins to answer. His voice is soft, contemplative. It’s at odds with the assertive man I’ve known.

“Sugar, even two days ago, if you’d asked me if I could envision a life where we didn’t have kids together, it would have been nearly impossible. One of the first fantasies I had after we met was of watching you nurse my baby at your breast before laying him down in his cradle and letting me lap at the sweet milk he’d leave behind.”

The mental image of that scene has an ache in my chest that tells me I want it, too.

“But this morning, seeing those papers? Realizing I could lose you or maybe, that I already had? It damn near broke me, Lily. Made me see that if I don’t have you, nothing matters. I almost don’t want to have any babies because it means sharing you with someone else. Say the word, and I’ll schedule a vasectomy for the soonest the doctor will do one. You are the most important person in my universe, Lily Bernice Duncan. That’s never going to change.”

“Well, maybe, let’s put a pin in the idea of a vasectomy.”

Shit, just the idea of sharp objects anywhere near that cock that brings me so much pleasure has fury arcing hot and angry through me. Besides, I asked what if I didn’t want to have babies. It wasn’t a statement, much less an actionable request!

Abe arches an eyebrow at me, and I realize I may have given away too much with that response.

“It’s taken care of, anyway.” I wasn’t leaving my future to chance with his mom’s sneaky tricks or pushy moves.

Color leaches from his face so quickly I almost lose track of the conversation entirely.

“Lily, what did you do?” His hands clutch me tighter to him, his eyes roving over me as though he has x-ray vision and can see some harm I’ve done myself internally, and I realize he mistook my comment for something more along the lines of his permanent vasectomy offer.
